Springfield Explorer (SIL)
Springfield Explorer 2.0
Explore with Purpose. Learn for Life. Lead with Confidence.
Springfield Explorer 2.0 is Springfield Secondary School's signature Student-Initiated Learning (SIL) programme that empowers every Springfielder to take ownership of their learning beyond the classroom.
Guided by our vision of developing Future-Ready Learners with a Caring Heart and the Confidence to Lead, Springfield Explorer 2.0 provides meaningful opportunities for students to explore their interests, develop real-world competencies, and grow into confident, self-directed learners.
Rooted in our STRIDE values—Service, Tenacity, Respect, Integrity, Diligence and Empathy—the programme encourages students to embrace challenges, reflect on their learning, and contribute positively to their school and the wider community.
Our Approach
Springfield Explorer 2.0 adopts a scaffolded approach to Student-Initiated Learning, recognising that student agency develops progressively through guidance, practice and reflection rather than by chance.
Designed as a three-year learning journey, the programme follows the Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) model. Students begin with carefully curated learning experiences that provide structure and support. As they grow in confidence and competence, they are progressively given greater ownership to make decisions, pursue personal interests, and design their own learning experiences.
This intentional progression nurtures students who are curious, resilient and self-directed, preparing them to become lifelong learners who are ready to thrive in an ever-changing world.
Four Learning Domains
Springfield Explorer 2.0 supports students' holistic development through four interconnected learning domains:
Maker
Develop creativity and innovation by designing, creating and expressing ideas through hands-on experiences.
Thinker
Cultivate curiosity, critical thinking and problem-solving through inquiry, exploration and reflection.
Athlete
Build resilience, perseverance and healthy lifestyles through physical challenges and active living.
Citizen
Develop empathy, social responsibility and a spirit of service by contributing meaningfully to the school and wider community.
Student Outcomes
Through Springfield Explorer 2.0, Springfielders will:
Become Future-Ready Learners by taking increasing ownership of their learning, embracing curiosity, and adapting confidently to new challenges.
Demonstrate a Caring Heart by serving others, contributing positively to their community, and living out the STRIDE values.
Lead with Confidence by making purposeful decisions, pursuing personal interests, and showing initiative in authentic learning experiences.
Develop lifelong learning dispositions such as resilience, creativity, collaboration and reflection that prepare them for learning, work and life.
Celebrating Growth
Springfield Explorer 2.0 celebrates students who demonstrate commitment, initiative and continuous growth throughout their learning journey.
Students are recognised through milestone achievements across the four learning domains, celebrating not only what they accomplish, but also the perseverance, curiosity and self-direction they demonstrate along the way. Those who consistently challenge themselves across all four domains receive the All Clear Achievement, recognising their commitment to holistic development and lifelong learning.
