'Tae' means to kick or smash with the feet, 'Kwon' implies punching or destroying with the hands or fists and 'Do' means the art or the way. Hence, Taekwondo, a Korean phraseology, literally means the art of foot and hand fighting.

From 2010 onwards, Taekwondo will be included in the Singapore Schools Sports Council (SSSC) and Singapore Primary Schools Sports Council (SPSSC) calendar. The acceptance of Taekwondo as an inter-school sport will enhance the status of the sport further.

In Springfield members of the Taekwondo team train regularly to learn new skills and sharpen their techniques. Under the guidance of their coach, Mr Tan Cheng Hui, the members of the school Taekwondo team trained hard and took part in National Inter-School Championships in the past four years and achieved very commendable success.

2013 Overseas Training Trip to Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City

Springfield Taekwondo also exposed and enrich their students to the practice of Taekwondo in other countries. Overseas training and school exchange trips are arranged for selected students to countries whose have achieved international standing and status in the international taekwondo circuit.

On 7th November 2013, my friends and I went on a school trip with Taekwondo to Vietnam. It was a 6 days 5 nights training trip and we will be training with the Vietnam national team. I am very excited because we get to sharpen our hone our skills in Taekwondo and also sightsee around Vietnam.

Our teachers in charge had planned for us to train with Vietnam’s National Poomsae (Pattern) team. I couldn’t wait as I knew I will be able to learn a lot from them. The Vietnam National Coach, Master Huy conducted the training for us over the next 4 days. The language was not a barrier because the coach was able to speak English and we could understand his instructions and explanations.

The national team’s training was very different from how we trained back home. The standard of the national team was very high and I found it quite tiring at first. Even though it was tough, I found it interesting because I got to try out different routines and moves. I learned more about different moves in Taekwondo and how to execute them properly. From example, we learned the Ap-chagi (front kick) and Yeop-chagi (side kick). I am glad got the chance to learn from the world’s best Taekwondo masters because it made me better in Taekwondo.

Apart from touring around Ho Chi Minh City, we also went to the Cu Chi tunnels. The tunnels were used by the Vietnamese during the war as it was very dangerous for them to go outside. They basically lived under there until no Americans were around. Our guide showed us some of the traps used by the Vietnamese on the Americans. The Vietnamese were very smart as the traps looked really useful and would fool any soldier trying to get past it. Then we went into the tunnels. The tunnels were so cramped and small that all of us had to crawl. I wondered how the Vietnamese could crawl around these tunnels every day as I just crawled through a hundred meters and my legs were so painful. The tunnels were also very confusing. Luckily I brought my torchlight as it was really dark in there.

I had learned a lot going on this trip and I hope I can visit this place again someday.

2011 Overseas Training Trip to Vietnam, Ho Chih Minh City

In 2011, the students were sent to an overseas training trip to Vietnam. The students trained with the Vietnam Female National Poomsae Team. They trained under the tutelage of Master Nguyen Thanh Huy. He is the Chief Secretariat of the Vietnam Taekwondo Federation and is the Head Coach of the Vietnam Female National Poomsae Team.

The Springfield Taekwondo Students went through an intensive centralised 5 day training stint in Vietnam Ho Chih Minh City.

The 5 days training includes exercise and stretching and the students were put through a series of exercise that stretched them to the limit.

All these stretches improved their flexibility until they were able to perfect their kicks.

2010 Overseas Training Trip to South Korea, Seoul

Springfield Taekwondo went for their first overseas training trip to South Korea Seoul. They trained at various locations including the Korean Tigers, the Discover Taekwondo Training Centre at the War Memorial Hoguk Mudogwan and Bucheon Information Industry High School. The first visit was at the International Kumgang Taekwondo Center where the students trained under the master tutelage of Taekwondo Master An Byeong Cheol.

Bucheon Information Industry High School was the next training stop. This is where we get to see how Taekwondo training was in an actual training session in a school environment. Springfield Taekwondo members trained together with the students from Bucheon in a 3-hour training session.

The next stop did not disappoint the group members. We were going to visit and train together with the Korean Tigers Demonstration Team. The visit to the Korean Tigers started with a 1-hour warm up session where our students tried to keep up with the practice session. Other than being challenged by the cartwheels and somersaults, our student fare well in the training. The Korean Tigers then demonstrated their skills in a awesome performance for the group.
